My published works include &quot;PRINTED CIRCUITS&quot; (1994) a collection of short stories, &quot;<a href=\"http:\/\/shats.com\/#sailing\" data-cke-saved-href=\"#sailing\">Sailing towards the Sunset<\/a>&quot; (1998), a novel, \u00a0winner of the 1998 Schweipert literary award of the Hebrew University, Jerusalem (and the Haifa Cultural Fund award) and Hila and the Sockfish (2004) a story for children.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In the late 1990's I translated to Hebrew an obscure novel titled &quot;SAILING TOWARDS THE SUNSET BY AVNER SHATS&quot; by Nell Zink, now (2016) published in the original English along with &quot;EUROPEAN STORY FOR AVNER SHATS&quot; as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Private-Novelist-Fiction-Nell-Zink\/dp\/0062458302\">PRIVATE NOVELIST<\/a> by Ecco press . No one read it at the time. it begins as follows:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&quot;It having become apparent that I should write a novel, my next concern\u00a0became which novel I should write.\u00a0 An obvious choice was Avner Shats'\u00a0recent debut, Sailing Towards the Sunset. &quot;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">I translated other short works by Zink, three of them appeared in Israeli literary magazines (a fairytale, Prince Cuckoo, in\u00a0Masmerim;\u00a0a short story inspired by Kafka in &quot;Orot&quot;'\u00a0and a short story,&quot;The Littlest Guinea Pig: A Story of Savage Rebellion&quot;, co-translated with Zohar Eitan, in Helicon.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Avner_Shats\">wikipdia entry<\/a>\u00a0with only\u00a0some minor inaccuracies<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">For the benefit of Nell Zink fans, here is the opening lines of &quot;European Story&quot;:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">This story will be composed in bad English, the up-and-coming lingua franca of the European Union and, with any luck, the world. Bad English incongruously pairs transparent simplicity with high-flown academic jargon. Willful misapprehension of everyday words and ignorance of clich\u00e9 make bad English a forceful vehicle for literary expression.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">In 2002 I was Hebrew Writer Visiting Fellow at the Oxford Center for Hebrew and Jewish Studies in Yarnton. I also featured in the [extremely obscure] documentary No War Last Night (Germany 2003), which chronicled the tense last few days leading up to the Iraq war.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I wrote literary reviews for Israeli daily papers &quot;Haaretz&quot; and &quot;Yediot Achronot&quot;\u00a0and other publications.\u00a0Contributed to &quot;<a href=\"http:\/\/shats.com\/AR\/Previous\/AvnerNovember2000.htm\" data-cke-saved-href=\"AR\/Previous\/AvnerNovember2000.htm\">Animal Review<\/a>&quot; (in English, edited by Nell Zink) and had\u00a0an internet column in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.notes.co.il\/avner\" data-cke-saved-href=\"http:\/\/www.notes.co.il\/avner\">Notes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">Is Man descended from the seals?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">Was pirate Sasportas's wife converted to Judaism?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">Can one navigate at sea by Universal Energy?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">Is the female breast-size a guarantee of genetic superiority?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Answers to these questions and others are to be found in &quot;Sailing towards the Sunset&quot;, Avner Shats' first novel. Regrettably, you'll have to learn Hebrew in order to do read it. But it's worth it. Here is the back cover blurb &#8211; actually, I wrote it &#8211; the PR people at Zemora-Bitan Publishing are that lazy &#8211; but I included things other people said:<\/p>\n<blockquote dir=\"ltr\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Is this a love story or a thriller? a cruise into the maze of Israeli culture or just a post-modernist game? an espionage story or an excuse for a magic journey to the Shetland Islands, a kingdom by the sea?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\">&quot;Sailing to the Sunset&quot; evades definitions: it is at the same time funny and sad, cynical and emotional, nostalgic and skeptic, fantastic and realistic; a reading experience of a different kind.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">members of the Schweipert literary award committee of the Hebrew University, Jerusalem, wrote in their award recommendations (among other flattering things:)<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\">&quot;Shats has a virtuoso's ability to mimic artistic styles of different schools and periods, and he uses this amazing virtue to trick the reader, amuse him, and also hint at the tremendous difficulty &#8211; especially to those who grew up in present day culture &#8211; to have authentic experiences, let alone reconstructing them in writing&#8230;&quot;Sailing towards the Sunset&quot; is a homage to literature and literary writing, and at the same time a book full of doubts as to the power of literature to fully express our feelings and thoughts&#8230;A brilliant and sophisticated post-modernist novel.&quot;<\/span><br \/>\n<strong>(Chaim Gury, Prof. Igal Schwartz, Dr. Iris Parush &#8211; the Award committee)<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The Israeli press on &quot;Printed Circuits&quot;, the first book by Avner Shats:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\">&quot;Ma'agalim Mudpasim&quot; (&quot;Printed Circuits&quot;) by Avner Shats, published by Keter, is one of the most interesting and enjoyable collections of stories I have seen in quite a while.
